Want to be a Loopmasters affiliate?

Hey all – I’m happy to announce that we’ve rolled out the Loopmasters Affiliate Programme.

So what is it?

Well – we’ve noticed that a lot of you go out of your way to mention us, promote our releases, and generally say nice things about us, so we’ve set up a programme that helps you when you help us.

By signing up to our affiliate programme in a few simple steps, you can benefit from Loopmasters commissions whenever someone clicks through from your website or blog and purchases anything on our site. There is no contractual obligation on your part, so you can stop at any time if you choose.

When you sign up you will see that we have set up some text, JPG, GIF and flash banners with links to the Loopmasters home page and a few other pages to get you started.

You just need to add one of these banners or text links to  your web site, forum or blog – if someone clicks on it and purchases on our site you are rewarded a commission. Our system is set to reward the last link clicked for up to 60 days.

The regular commission rate will be 10% and we are offering a £10 signup bonus to help get the ball rolling! The payout threshold is £25, and we will pay quarterly in January, April, July and October. (There will be enhanced promotions and incentives from time to time and we have plans for more targeted links and campaigns in the future which will give you more opportunities to direct visitors to specific product and earn more commissions.)

So what if you would like to be an affiliate, but for whatever reason, the banners or text links don’t work for you? Not a problem. Simply sign up as normal, and once you login click on the “DirectLinks” tab in the Advanced Tools area in your control panel to have DirectLink tracking turned on for your site. What this means is that, even without an affiliate banner or text link on your site, we’ll be able to track any traffic from your pages and associate purchases with them. So, for example, if you do a review of one of our releases on your blog and someone clicks through to Loopmasters and purchases something – you will earn commission! Or, let’s say you simply include us in your links area – again if someone clicks the link and purchases on our site, you earn commission.

On Facebook? Set your profile page up in DirectLink and anytime you post links to our site, repost our blog posts etc.  on your profile page you’ll earn commission when people click through and purchase!

By the way – if you are confused about how to do that, just  send our affiliate manager an email once you’ve signed up saying you want DirectLink turned on for your site, and he’ll do it for you.

M-Audio jumps in to the digital DJ game

As a vinyl junkie and certified “old skooler” it’s been an interesting transition from the old setup of two 12’s, a mixer and vinyl into the digital realm.  After a while I have been dragged (sometimes reluctantly) in the digi direction, simply down to the fact that most of the music that is sent to me is now in that format.  That, of course, involved a move over to the CDJs.  It may not be the case for those of you who grew up on those, but anyone who has spent years spinning vinyl can tell you that while the CDJs bring a new level of functionality to the game, they just don’t FEEL like playing records.

This was something that became obvious quickly to many people, and Native Instruments jumped in with Traktor Scratch, along with Serato – blending the world of digital with the old feel of vinyl and keeping the decks relevant.

A new player has recently jumped onto the scene in the form of M-Audio’s Torq

Boasting an impressive array of features and a VERY competitive price, Torq may be set to shake up the game.  However, the proof is in the pudding as they say and Torq still has to stand the true test of the punters.

That being said, they have some interesting new features, especially the fact that it is re-wireable! This represents an interesting new twist in the digi dj arena.  For a video check here.

Of course, the flame-wars about who and what is best continue – I’d be interested to hear your thoughts, especially from those of you who actually have and use any of these products.

In this production tutorial – Dave Wallace from the band takes us through a favoured technique for creating tough Bass sounds by looping a hardware bass sample in Kontakt, and then applying EQ and compression settings from within Cubase.

Red Bull Music Academy:This time London!

Here at Loopmasters we know it’s all about you artists, so I am always on the lookout to spread some useful info  here in our blog.  I’m sure many of are aware of the Red Bull Music Academy but for those of you who aren’t familiar let me urge you to check it out.  There’s a full bio on them at the site, but here’s a summary:

Every year the academy moves around the globe to a city that is considered to be elemental in the music scene in some way.  They choose  60 people to attend from an application process which you can find on their site.  “The Academy is intended for anyone with a strong yen for music and a desire to be involved in its evolution: DJs, producers, MCs, singers, sound engineers, broadcasters, laptop lapdancers, soulful songwriters – they’ll all be considered. You’ll need to be 18 or over when the Academy workshops starts… but there’s no other age limit.

No particular set of skills is necessary. For each Academy, two groups of 30 participants are chosen to represent a wide range of cultures, musical backgrounds and set of skills. There are no set quotas for any country or genre of music. Therefore everyone has an equal chance of coming along – as long as they have a creative vision, an honest attitude and an open approach.”

This year’s academy has been selected, and it’s due to take place in London this time from February 7 to March 12, 2010.  If you are interested in applying for the next edition of the Academy – hold tight for the next application phase in early 2011.  Yah, that may seem like a long way off, but in the scope of your creative career it’s nothing – besides it gives you all plenty of time to hone those skills and make sure you are at your best when you apply.

Are you tagging your mp3s properly? You should be.

I’ve just returned from a few weeks in the states, and during that time my in-box has filled up with quite a few label promos.  Don’t get me wrong,  I know I’m lucky – I won’t complain about that.  I’m encouraged by the great stuff coming my way – but sometimes I am amazed by how little attention people pay to tagging their files before they send them.  “So what?” you might ask.   Well – unless you don’t mind your tracks getting lost in the shuffle tagging is important. AND IT’S EASY.  Let’s break it down.

1. Download Itunes and install it on your computer.  It’s free and it’s what most people use to organize their libraries.  It also tags mp3s very easily.

2. Once you have Itunes installed just open the mp3 file in question (If you need to create an mp3 from your .WAV/.AIFF first Itunes will also do that)

3. Once you have the mp3 in the Itunes window simply right-click on it.  What you will see is something like the following:

4. Now select “Get Info” and Itunes will look like this…

5. You will see that there are some tabs that appear, like above. Select the “Info” tab and you will then see this…

Here’s where you fill in your info – track name, your artist name, name of the album or EP etc.  Notice that there’s also an “Artwork” tab so that if you have artwork for your release you can add this and Itunes will automatically show it.

Once you have an mp3, this tagging process literally takes a minute or two.  I think that’s worth it to make sure that your release gets properly credited to you by anyone you might send it to – especially if it’s going to busy djs who generally have bad memories and don’t have time to research a file they got two weeks ago that only says “Theshizbounce3″ in the file name.  By using this simple tagging method, your file info will show up in Itunes, CDJs, Serato etc. whenever your track is played.  Make the most of your music and tag it to ensure it doesn’t get lost in the shuffle!

Finally – just to visualize the difference, here’s what happens when I hover over an untagged and a tagged file.  Notice the info in the yellow box.

This month we caught up with master drummer Graham Fox while recording in Brighton for his new Brushes Sample collection due to be released on the Drum Drops label early 2010.

Having been brought up listening to the likes of Count Basie, Oscar Peterson, Tito Puente and later Jimi Hendrix (amongst others), Graham has worked as a session drummer recording for major labels such as EMI, Universal, Atlantic/Motown and Ubiquity.

Video: another tool in the independant artists’ arsenal

It’s not a secret that we’re big fans of music technology here at Loopmasters.  In that light, I am always on the lookout for ways that artists are taking advantage of technology in interesting and creative ways.

I’ve recently started to see more and more established artists launching video channels streaming video of them at work in their own studios and was thrilled to see that one of my own favorites, Atjazz has jumped in with his own Ustream station.  While I would prefer that the sound quality and video feed were better in this case, it’s a start and I will be keeping my eye on this channel.

I can’t think of a more interesting and educational way to watch people at the top of their craft work.  There’s live chat involved as well, giving both the artist and fans an instant connection while the process takes place.

I think we’ll be seeing a LOT more of this in the near future and it’s just another sign of how all this new technology is bridging the gap between artists and their supporters.
