Red Bull Music Academy 2010 Underway

The London 2010  segment of the Red Bull Music Academy is here. In fine form, Red Bull Music Academy Radio has come with another selection of great shows this week.  Red Bull Music Academy Radio will be broadcasting live from 10pm -12am daily throughout both terms of the Academy, which you can tune into at the RBMA Radio website and via NME.com. They’ll be airing extra interviews with pioneering minds of the music world, our beloved participants from every corner of the planet and dig out those dance-floor epiphanies from the live recordings of club sessions. Academy stalwart and skilled couch expert Emma Warren will be hosting interviews with mixing desk mavericks that you can tune into at home, or on the move via the RBMA iPhone app.

As far as their normal weekly programming – there’s a chat with the mighty Talib Kweli this week, as he tells us about his mission to bring vitality to hip hop’s hinterland, and they catch Hague-native and producer 2562 bringing the dubby four four template bang up-to-date. There’s a special spiritual edition of the Tribute To show, as Amsterdam’s torchbearer of weighty oddball funk Aardvarck brings a tribute to jazz icon John Coltrane. Apparently, they’ve also been given the green light for their live radio schedule,  ready to spread that on-air magic.  Here’s some of what’s on the way:

Defected 2010 Producers’ Competition!

Defected launch their Producer Competiton 2010 in partnership with Traxsource, Ableton and Loopmasters.

Following the enourmous sucess of Defected’s Producer Competition last year, we can announce details of a second competition for 2010.

Last year’s competition generated a huge amount of interest from the dance community, clocking up 1.500 entries with close to 20,00 people registering on the site to rate and comment on the tracks.  The standard of tracks was of the highest order, but eventually 19 year of Dutch producer Robacco Bossa’s track ‘Black Bird’ was selected as the winner and released on Defected Records

This time around Defected have teamed up with download hub Traxsource, top sample recource Loopmasters and leading production software company Ableton to bring you another chance to hit the big time.

The rules of the competition remain the same; upload your tracks to the site where they’ll be rated and commented on.  Phase II of the competition sees the Defected A&R team pick their favourite 10 track, which are then voted on by the public.

Ableton announces “The Bridge”

A couple things really caught my attention this year at NAMM and one of them was Ableton’s forthcoming integration with Serato, called “The Bridge”. Here’s what Ableton says about it:

The Bridge spans the gap between music production and DJing, creating a natural link between Ableton Live and Serato Scratch Live or ITCH. The Bridge provides a powerful fusion of DJ and production tools, opening a world of opportunities for DJing, remixing and live performance.

The Bridge works in both directions:

Ableton to Serato

The Bridge provides Ableton Transport Control (ATC), giving you turntable-style control of your own multitrack productions. Simply drag an Ableton Live Set to a deck in Scratch Live or ITCH and use your turntables, CDJ or ITCH controller to control the transport.

Serato to Ableton

The Bridge gives you the ultimate mixtape creation tool. Perform your mix in Scratch Live or ITCH and save it as an automated Live Set. This way, you play your mix – better than cut and pasting it together in a DAW – but you also get detailed editing options.

Reverbnation shop in Beta

Reverbnation have just added another tool to their growing arsenal of tools designed to help independant artists take things into thier own hands.  For those not familiar, I recommend taking a look at Reverbnation and seeing if there’s something there for you.

With their already established mailing list management system, newsletter templates, buzz tracker (helps you see what is being said about you all over the web), impressive array of useful widgets to help you get your music and profile all over the web, gig finder tools, distribution channels and more, I am guessing there might be. These are free but there are also some services that you can choose to pay for, with extras.

One of the great things about creating a Reverbnation profile is the way that it easily integrates with Facebook with a few button clicks…when you set one up there’s a step-by-step process that will help you create  a “My Band” tab on your Facebook profile. So, for example, whenever you add a gig to your schedule or add a new song to your Reverbnation profile, this will automatically be reflected on your Facebook profile. And, of course, there’s the usual syncing with Twitter, Myspace and the like (so when you add a show date in Reverbnation it can automatically tweet about it and then re-tweet the day of the gig).

They’ve just launched the shop (Beta), which allows you to create shop products in your reverbnation account, set a price and have them automatically published to your “My Band” page. I’ve put a screen-shot of my facebook “My Band” page above – so you can see that when people land on this page (which you can set as the default landing page for anyone visiting your Facebook page) they can become a fan, join your mailing list, share the page to friends, listen to tracks, join your street team, see what shows you have upcoming, and now purchase tracks.  Reverbnation pay out via PayPal once you reach a minimum sales amount.

It’s early days on this and I am curious to see how this plays out – but it certainly indicates that more and more options are there for you to get your music out there.
